Five Best Places for July Fourth Fireworks and Concerts

Macy's Annual July Fourth Fireworks in NYC is largest in US

The Fourth of July and fireworks displays go together like hot dogs and mustard, kids and ice cream.  Here are five of the best places in the United States to watch Fourth of July fireworks:

New York City — The biggest and best, of course, is the annual Macy’s Fourth of July fireworks display.  This year again, the pyrotechnics are from barges parked in the Hudson River, near the Statue of Liberty, who will be basking in the glow of 40,000 shells in a 26-minute  display synchronized to music.   A special symphony of patriotic music, Broadway show tunes and other favorites is being provided  by The New York Pops orchestra, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir as well as a capella, gospel, choral groups and barbershop quartets.  There’s a FREE download of the music on the Macy’s website. The show is being televised by NBC at 9 p.m. EST, which will be broadcasting from the brand new cruise ship Norwegian Epic, berthed in the Hudson River.

The Westin Riverfront Resort & Spa in Beaver Creek is the first hotel in Colorado to earn the important Silver status of LEED Certification.  How difficult is it to get this green travel award?  Only nine hotels in the U.S. have earned it, including the Westin Riverfront, which opened early in 2009.

To celebrate this achievement, the resort is offering a special The Westin Riverfront Green Package, to save the green in your wallet as well as the environment. Right now, during peak winter ski season, vacation package rates start at $319 for a studio suite and includes some green goodies –

  • Complimentary valet parking when you arrive with more than two people in the vehicle or in a hybrid vehicle,
  • Participation in Westin’s “Make a Green Choice” program, which pays you back for opting out of getting fresh towels and linens each day.  Sign up for your choice of a $5  resort gift card for each night you participate or 500 Starpoints for each stay,
  • The Westin also will purchase Verified Carbon Credits to offset the carbon emissions from a round-trip drive to the Vail Valley from metro Denver, purchased from Sustainable Travel International

The Westin Riverfront is eco-friendly from the ground up.  Here’s just some of what makes it a green hotel:

Five Ways Save to Money on Airline Travel

airplane_clipartHoliday travel is the the peak travel season of the year, and even though many of the cheap seats are already booked.  This High Fives for Airline Travel is five ways to  save money on  your airline tickets and stretch your travel dollar.

Plan Twice, Book Once – Airlines now charge $150 or more if you change your ticket after it’s been booked, and many hotels now charge “no show” fees of $50 or more. Double-checking the details before booking can help you avoid these potential added charges.

Pack Light – Minimize checked baggage fees by packing and checking less. For longer trips, the cost of dry cleaning may be cheaper than checking extra luggage for clean shirts. Look into overnight delivery and luggage forwarding services  such as Luggage Forward  for business trip samples, or your skis, snowboard or golf clubs for a leisure trip.  And remember that JetBlue and Southwest are the last airlines left which do not charge for checked baggage on domestic flights.

Be Flexible To Find Savings - Search alternate airports.  For example, in New York City, fares are may be less expensive at LaGuardia or Newark than at JFK.  When flights to Jackson Hole are booked or too costly, they are often available and less expensive into Idaho Springs, two hours away.  You get the idea.
